Sound Summit exists to give musicians, producers, composers, promoters and fans the opportunity to interact, reflect and collaborate with each other, building communities around what they do and exploring the methodologies of why and how they do it. The festival explores the depths and reach of independent, innovative music in Australia.

Sound Summit is part of the This Is Not Art (TINA) festival that happens annually for five days over the October long weekend. It is held in Newcastle, NSW, along with Electrofringe, National Young Writers Festival, Critical Animals and Crack Theatre Festival.

Over five days and twenty six panels, performances and presentations we’ve learned so much, and been inspired from what we’ve seen and heard; and we hope this was the case for you too.

Sound Summit 2009 starts today, which is incredibly exciting.

To get your ears and eyes ready for the big weekend to come, take a look at this most excellent clip for ‘Landrunner’ by Ducktails. Ducktails (USA) will be performing at the This Is Not Art showcase gig at the Cambridge Hotel on Friday October 2 with Pumice (NZ), Rosy Parlane (NZ), Qua (Vic), Free Choice Duo (Vic), Jim Cuomo (USA), Aoi (Vic), Guarde Compartmente and Stalker. Tickets are selling fast, but are still available online through moshtix, in person in advance at the Cambridge Hotel, or at the venue on the night.

Matt Mondanile of Ducktails will also be appearing on two panels throughout Sound Summit:

This Thursday, October 1, join Sound Summit and our This Is Not Art festival buddies for This Is: This Not Art 2009, the official opening event for the tenth This Is Not Art and Sound Summit. Sound Summit favourite Cleptoclectics will be performing a live set with other carefully selected This Is Not Art highlights such as Ivy, Lanie Lane, Julez and Dragonfly, Sean Healy and Dan Mackinlay, MMTNS and other special guests to launch the new This Is Not Art festival club on Thorn St. in style! Free entry to boot, and it all starts at 8pm.

The entire This Is Not Art festival program is now available for download in pretty shiny PDF format – check it out. And of course, Sound Summit’s program is shaping up to be very exciting, too!

A reminder that tickets for the This Is Not Art showcase gigs at the Cambridge Hotel on Friday October 2 and Saturday October 3 are selling quite briskly, so it is definitely advisable to pick yours up soon. With a massive lineup including acts such as Vivian Girls (USA), Ducktails (USA), Pumice (NZ), Qua, Aoi, Free Choice Duo, Crab Smasher, The Abyss and a whole lot more, you don’t want to miss out. Tickets are only $12 + bf presale for each night, $20 + bf for a two-night pass, or $15 per night on the door.

In borrowing terminology, NWA shrinks the notion of distance between genre, taste, Australia’s own vastness and the world. Neither popular nor alternative, one genre nor another, NWA represents a new breed that find refuge in the space between us, played out in realtime around a renewed Newcastle.

This year’s festival presents the inaugural collaboration between Sound Summit and New Weird Australia, with an eight hour mini-festival occurring throughout Newcastle on Sunday October 4. With eleven live acts and two DJs including Holy Balm!, Castings, Moonmilk and Blastcorp to name a few performing over three intimate spaces (ArtHive Gallery, Renew Newcastle HQ, This Is Not Art Festival Club), it’s going to be quite special.
